Family Fun in California- La Brea Tar Pits
When most people think of a California vacation they probably think of Disneyland and Sea World. While both are fun family destinations, there are many other family friendly locations. From museums to aquariums you will find a variety of fun activities in California. Our family travelled to California to review a variety of activities. Over the next few days we will share some of those reviews. To find a more complete listing of our California reviews visit our website at http://www.familyfriendlyamerica.com
Our first location is:
La Brea Tar Pits 5801 Wilshire Blvd., Los Angeles 323.934.7243 www.tarpits.org
More than 3 million fossils have been discovered at this site. This is the country's only fossil excavation site in an urban area. During the
summer there is still excavating done. There is a walking path that goes around the tar pit. What a great way to mix education into a family vacation!
The kids thought the life-sized replicas of some prehistoric mammals were great. There are large signs explaining the tar pits and some of the fossils excavated.
The only drawback to the free walk is that it only takes about 15 minutes to walk around and read the signs. For a longer day out, we recommend the Page Museum as well.
It is free to walk around the tar pits areas. The on-site Page Museum is $7 for adults, $4.50 for seniors, students with ID and children age 13 - 17, $2 for children age 5 - 12, and under age 5 is free. The first Tuesday of each month is free admission day.
Parking is available in a parking lot behind the museum. The cost is $8 prepaid. Have your ticket validated at the museum to receive $2 back when leaving the parking lot.
HOURS: Daily 10 am - 4 pm
