Visiting the Pioneer Living History Village in Phoenix, Arizona
We have found one of the best ways to teach our children history is to take them to see history. Living history museums are a great way to share a love of the past. The Pioneer Living History Village north of Phoenix depicts life in the southwest during the late 1800s and early 1900s. There is a large selection of original buildings, as well as some reproductions. Throughout the property, there are costumed interpreters to share information about the buildings and life during this time period. The buildings are scattered around in a town-like style which gave a very authentic feel. You really feel like you are walking around a pioneer village. Tour a variety of town buildings, as well as numerous cabins, a fort, farmhouse, and opera house. There are some animals to pet, which was a favorite for the kids.
There is a restaurant on-site, a small gift shop and plenty of restrooms (some are portable toilets but they are scattered throughout the property).
One drawback we found is that the interpreters did not provide us with much information or interact with us much. The admissions clerk was very friendly and gave us a full overview of the town. The blacksmith also answered questions for the kids. Other than that we got a 'hi' here or there but were outwardly ignored by one interpreter even when the kids were asking questions. This didn't ruin our trip though but was annoying.
