Visiting Pikes Peak in Colorado Springs
If you are Colorado Springs, you will no doubt recognize Pikes Peak. The mountain rises 14,100 feet above sea level. The view from the top is amazing though be ready for quite a temperature difference (dress appropriately! Even if it is summer temperatures in the Springs, you can expect it to be cold and windy at the top of Pikes Peak.).
There are three ways to reach the summit; the Pikes Peak Railway, Barr Trail and the Cog Railway. Pikes Peak Highway is a 19 mile long partially paved road which is open year round (weather permitting). The drive is about two hours round trip. It's a good idea to fill the gas tank before leaving. Barr Trail is a 13 mile trail. The Cog Railway travels 8.9 miles up the mountain side. It is open April - December (weather permitting).
According to the website, the trip to the top of Pikes Peak is not recommended for those with a serious fear of heights, severe medical issues or young babies.
