The Farm at Lee Martinez Park is a fun day out for the family. Learn a bit about the history of farming and see the animals as you walk through this picturesque authentic historical farm. For an additional fee pony rides are available on the weekends. Be prepared for quite a long line for pony rides. Very laid back and enjoyable. Nice variety of animals to visit and there is a small farm-themed playground. The kids loved to stop at the old well to pump water. Very nice to find a fun establishment at such a budget friendly price.

South Park City Museum in Fairplay Colorado- Day Trip from Denver

Just a day trip from Denver is the small town of Fairplay, home to the South Park City Museum. The museum is a wonderful way to explore frontier boomtown life. It has 34 authentic buildings laid out in a town-like fashion. Browse through over 60,000 artifacts! The buildings are all original to the site or have been moved from nearby towns.

One of the kids' favorite attractions is the old train (does not actually run). They liked being able to walk through the old caboose. The general store also captured their interest for quite awhile. Be warned that the property is not very stroller friendly due to a lot of ruttiness and rough terrain. Check their website for a variety of special events.

A Day Trip From Denver- Rocky Mountain National Park

Rocky Mountain National Park is located in Estes Park, a beautiful day drive from the Denver area. Nature lovers will have a great time on the 359 miles of trails available in RMNP. Gorgeous views and amazing wildlife sightings throughout the park. Trail Ridge Road cuts through snow crusted mountain sides even in the summer (The road is closed during the winter). The children love to see the snow right next to road even during the warm weather. There are lots of areas to get out and walk and climb around. The only drawback we found is the fact that restrooms are few and far between; make sure to use them while at the visitor's center.

Visiting the Wings Over the Rockies Air & Space Museum in Denver

The Wings Over the Rockies Air & Space Museum in Denver is full of informative displays and exhibits depicting aircraft and military history. The museum is housed in a former military training hangar on the former Lowry Air Force Base. There is an area of the museum that displays the history of Lowry AFB. Also on display is Luke Skywalker's X Wing Fighter. The kids were interested by the variety of airplanes. If you can go on one of the Open Cockpit Days, you can sit inside the cockpit on selected aircraft (usually busy but a lot of fun). One drawback is that most of the displays are hands-off so young children lose interest quickly.

The Lookout Mountain Nature Center is a short, scenic drive from the Denver area. Hike the trails of this 110 acre park and enjoy the amazing wildlife. The trails are easy to navigate, though you might find it a little challenging with a traditional baby stroller. The on-site nature center has many hands-on interactive exhibits. Picnic areas are available.

Colorado Historical Fun: Lakewood Heritage Center

Lakewood Heritage Center is a historical park that has 10 historic structures and 30,000 artifacts highlighting the culture of the early to mid 20th century in America and particularly in Colorado. Tour the museum then walk around the park like setting to visit a beauty shop, diner, houses and a schoolhouse. There are easy to navigate paths; stroller friendly. There are plenty of restrooms including some in a few of the historical buildings. The facility offers tours and classes/ activities for children to learn more about the time period.

One of America's largest family waterparks, Hyland Hills Water World has 42 attractions scattered over 64 acres. There's something for every water lover; from the slow-paced Lazy River to the thrill of the Screamin' Mimi. Lockers are available for rental. Many picnic areas including some covered pavilions. Food concessions on site. Be warned that the lines are usually very long for most rides. Also, some of the rides require carrying a large raft of innertube while in line (sometimes for an hour or longer).

Family Fun in the Denver Area- Heritage Square

Nestled in the foothills west of Denver is Heritage Square, a Victorian style amusement park with shopping and a live performance theater called the Music Hall. The theater has a variety of performances including a children's theater. Activities include some traditional amusement rides, an alpine slide, go carts, bumper boats and a train. There are restaurants and snack stands on site. The kids love the old 50's style diner (formerly used as a site to tape the Food Network show, Unwrapped) and the candy store which has a variety of treats.

It is free to walk around the village area. Rides are paid for per ride (using tickets) or by an all-day wristband. The rides can add up quite quickly.

Hammond's Candies has been making tasty treats for 84 years. Their candy canes are sold in fine stores across the country.   According to Hammond's, even Santa Claus himself is a client.   They offer a free tour which ends at a store that sells their tasty treats. The tour starts with a short video (even the young children seemed interested in most of it). Then the group is led to observation windows to see how the candy is made. It's a very interesting process to watch.   The tour is short enough to hold the interest of even young children. The tour guides provide lots of information and are happy to answer questions. Everyone receives a sample at the end of the tour.

Learning History is Fun at Four Mile Historic Park in Denver

Located on the banks of Cherry Creek is 12 acres of Denver history. Four Mile Historic Park includes Denver's oldest standing structure and a variety of pioneer exhibits.   Tour the grounds with a costumed tour guide or attend one of the special events for old fashioned family fun. Check their schedule to see when they are offering events. At different times we have been able to make butter, make crafts, cook over a campfire, get water from the well, ride in a horse-drawn wagon, pan for gold and hear wonderful Native American stories.
